Heterotopic
Acrylic paint on frosted acrylic panel, looping projected digital animation and soundscape (2023)
‘Heterotopic’ draws on ideas of colonial perception of the Caribbean (in specifically, Jamaica) being a paradise to be plundered contrast against re-imaginings of characters from Jamaican folklore and the ‘utopian’ complexities of black diasporic homecoming.
The piece was created as part of the group show ‘Resonance’ at 198 Contemporary, London as part of the Women of Colour Art Award that Ashman was selected for.
